He is also going to be putting his music on there. And possibly games, so it's not just a 2k DVD player, though that will be it's main use.

Excellent then you will want
Cpu: Q9550
Ram: 4gb G-skill pi-black
Motherboard: standard highend selection either a P45 or 750i/780i (asus is preffered with 780i
Gfx: 4870 or nvidia 260 <--- will be the loudest component if silence is needed then a passive 9600 is the best you can get.
OS: xp MCE or Vista home premium
Hdd: 3x500/750gb Raid5 for storage and 1 250gb seagate barracuda 7200.11 for the OS
Optical drives: Blu-ray and dvd combo drive
PSU: KustomPCs.co.uk - Nexus NX5000 Ultra Quiet PSU
Case: KustomPCs.co.uk - Silverstone LC16M Silver unless he wants a gimmicky one with a touchscreen KustomPCs.co.uk - OrigenAE HTPC Aluminium S21T Silver
Extra software:
I use dvd decryptor to rip my dvds then another to process them I haven't done it for ages and seemed to of lost the program whoops
Cpu cooler: Zalman 9500 should fit in that case although you may want to look at some reviews to see there test systems

Alright, well when he gets back from deer hunting I will let him know what I've found out and see what he says. Also, what am I going to need to set up RAID? I've never done it before so I have no idea what's going on there. I'll go on newegg later this afternoon and link all the parts and see what you have to say.

Aren't you going to buy a DVD burner, too? So he can listen to muzac in his car? Don't get the GTX 260, get the 4870.
