Hey guys,

I'm new to self builds but i don't want to dish out 8000$ for some allienware box :)
I have build pc long time ago in p2 days. However pretty much from the same time i stopped following hardware since the choice started growing almost exponential.

I need your help in building my self a box that i primarily use in these 3 tasks.

1. Software Dev
2. Running multiple virtual machines
3. FPS gaming

I started putting a list of components together, but i need your help. I'm in canada and looking at options of canadacomputers, newegg.ca, ncix.com, tigerdirect.ca

First things first, am i missing any components in my list?

  1. PSU
  2. CPU
  3. MOBO
  4. Monitor
  5. case
  6. optical drive // do I need blue ray?
  7. NIC? are they built in?
  8. snd? will onboard suffice?
  9. fan? stock?
  10. heatsink? stock?
  11. RAM -- 12+ gig?
  12. Video card (GPU) -- need help in picking,$$ not issue but within reason
  13. HDD + ssd
  14. WIRED keyboard + mouse -- will pick something wired for gaming
  15. raid controller?

Second, this is the list for the items above, there are some comments in here.
CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply Do i need 850W?! i will be running ssd +hdd, maybe multiple hdd, what are the tips and recommendations for wattage?
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Samsung 2443BW-HAS (american ver is 2443BWT-1)
case - unknown
"LG DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model GH24NS50 - OEM 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X … *24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X … *16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM"
any recommendations? Picked a random one

So far it's working out towards $1,066.95 CAD

Recommendations for ssd and hdd are welcome

I presume there is no reason for getting 2 vid cards as there are not enough apps that support it from my understanding.

What do you guys think? Any comments, help would be really appreciated

You should go with NCIX if you don't live in B.C. And order soon! The stupid harmonized sales tax is coming soon, so you'll be paying %13 instead of %6 on stuff from NCIX.

That monitor seems really expensive.

The power supply is overkill really, if you aren't doing xfire 5870s or water cooling you don't need more then 750w. NCIX has a nice combo going NCIX.com - Buy NCIX Gaming Bundle Deal XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB Video Card & 650W XXX Edition Modular Power Supply - XFX 650W & 5850 In Canada. gets you a nice high quality modular psu, and an 5850, which is a very good card.

Same motherboard on NCIX for less NCIX.com - Buy Gigabyte X58A-UD3R ATX LGA1366 X58 DDR3 4PCI-E SATA3 USB3.0 Sound GLAN CrossFireX SLI Motherboard - GA-X58A-UD3R In Canada. looks like a good one.

The i7 920 is a lot cheaper on newegg for some reason, could price match it on NCIX, or order it off newegg, up to you. It's a great cpu though.

This is one of the best SSDs out there right now NCIX.com - Buy Intel X25-M 80GB 34NM Postville 2.5IN SSD SATA Solid State Disk Flash Drive - SSDSA2MH080G2C1 In Canada. cheaper on NCIX as well, by quite a bit.

WD blacks are solid hdds, NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty - WD6401AALS In Canada.

Case is up to you, I'm kinda particular to the coolermaster 690 II advanced, as one should be on its way here in a day or two, or HAF 932 is good for a full tower.

A dvd burner is dvd burner :p Take your pick, everything else looks good.

Onboard audio will be fine, network card is in the motherboard, board supports RAID 0, 1, and 5, only need an after-market heatsink if you plan on overclocking. Pretty sure that covers everything?

Thank you so much. I forgot to mention i didn't shop around for the prices :)

And are you certain about being charged only 6% from NCIX?

I think we are missing ram.
When it says supports raid-X does that mean onboard raid controller?
Would i need higher wattage for the psu if i wanted to add an extra hdd?
I do plan on slightly overclocking the 920 - have not decided by how much, probably temperature would be the deciding factor. From what i gather they are pretty stable being overclocked. Any recommendations for heatsink/fan if they are needed?

Also, are there any caveats i should be aware of with the gfx card in the bundle?

Actually I was wrong :p It's %5 PST for anyone outside of B.C. So you save a lot on NCIX actually.

For the RAID, on the motherboard's specifications it says
Code:
	South Bridge:
6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
Marvell 9128 chip:
2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, and RAID 1
GIGABYTE SATA2 chip:
1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
2 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (GSATA2_8, GSATA2_9) supporting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD
JMicron JMB362 chip:
2 x eSATA 3Gb/s connectors (eSATA/USB Combo) on the back panel sup- porting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD

So if you need more then RAID 0, 1, 5, or 10 (I have no clue on any other then 0 TBH) then you would need a separate card.

Not at all for more watts, XFX uses seasonic to manufacture their PSU's I'm pretty sure. So they're up there with seasonic and corsair power supplies, best of the best. There's a sale on the corsair 750w, but it ends up being pretty much the same price as that XFX psu/card combo so. Plus that PSU looks sick lol.

For good cheap RAM I'd get these OCZ golds, NCIX.com - Buy OCZ OCZ3G1333LV6GK Gold 6GB 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-20 240PIN DIMM Triple Channel Memory Kit - OCZ3G1333LV6GK In Canada. nice price on them as well. More I look around on NCIX the more tempted I get ><

For a heatsink, there's a few choices, a good budget cooler is the hyper 212 NCIX.com - Buy Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink AM2 AM3 LGA1366 LGA775 LGA1156 120MM - RR-B10-212P-GP In Canada. which is at an insane price lol. Usually that much american.

Or you could go for something larger like the megahalems NCIX.com - Buy Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Heatsink Cooler LGA1156 LGA1366 LGA775 - Megahalems Rev. B In Canada. which you'd also need to buy a fan for.
