Help building a budget computer

My computer is a few years old. I'm still using an AMD 3400+, a gig of RAM, a 300W PSU, a 1650 Pro GPU, and a 160 gig HDD, so I need an upgrade. I play games on my PC, not a lot, but I play em on it. Partly because my computer can't handle a whole lot of games from the past couple years, I mainly play older games. I'd like to be able to play the latest games, but I don't have to play them on high settings or anything. Mid would be nice. I need something to hold me over for a year or two is all. By that time, I should actually be able to spend a bit more. I'm out of the loop as far as PC hardware goes. Could an adequate machine be built for say, 500-700 dollars?

Thats what I'm recommending for a friend. But for the video card you could upgrade to a ati 4850 or nvidia 9800gtx+.

^^^ thats a good build although I would add the Asus 4870 which is on newegg atm with a $30 rebate to make it $205 and it has a better then stock cooler.
