Other that SSD, have hard drives really changed much in the past few years?

For example, how different in terms of speed is my 7200rpm 250GB WD from 3 years ago compared to a 7200rpm 1TB WD Black Caviar today? Both are SATA. The only thing I can think of is the Cache.

What is the way to go these days for performance? (Media/gaming station)

Thanks

rpm, cache, micro cpu's in the hdd's (which i do not know much about), and interface (sata 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0), are some of the things that come to mind that affect speed. by how much? i don't know, but they do.

the setup that's becoming popular is an ssd for your OS (and important programs) alongside hdd's (for other programs, data storage, etc.) if you can't afford an ssd, then a speedy hdd is probably your next best bet.
