I've read a few reports on the net about some issues with ibuypower laptops.
If he's just using it for normal laptop work I suggest IBM, especially if he has as much money to burn as it sounds like.
The T series are titanium composite and built like a tank, my Dad has used the T20 for 2 years, and just got the T40 last year and the thing is amazing for normal work use.
Extremely solid and quick.

no i say get acer.

if you look at newegg they have laptops that have dual core processors, 1gb ram, integrated video of course, and under $1K. doesn't have to be acer.. other brands too.. but acer is most common at computer stores usually... good prices.
