would the 8800GTS be the next step up from the 7900gs?

7950gt (sometimes 8600gts in shader-intensive games like STALKER or FEAR) is... then 8800gts 320mb and 7900gtx (same level)..

No I would say the logical step up from a 7900GS is the X1950XT. (Simply becaue it is more easily avalable and better value for money than 7950GT)
