So I'm building a gaming pc. I know a lot about software but I'm kind of a noob when it comes to hardware so I need some help picking out parts. This is my very tentative list so far of the major parts (not including burner, monitor, case etc). Please tell me what you think of it or if I should change anything. My max budget for the entire computer is about $1100.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ 2.80GHz / 2MB Cache / 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB / Windsor / Dual Core / Socket AM2 / Processor with Fan - $163

Motherboard: Gigabyte M61SME-S2 NVIDIA Socket AM2 MicroATX Motherboard / Audio / Video / PCI Express / 10/100 Ethernet LAN / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA / RAID - $60

Memory: Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz E.P.P. Memory (2 x 1024) - $120

Hard Drive: Seagate / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive - $90

Video Card: XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB SLI PCIe Video Card - $300

And one thing thats really confusing me is why some 2GB RAM is a really lot more than other 2GM RAM (DDR2). I know the answer is probably really simple. thanks.

I think anything with a 8800gts and a 5600+ processor would be just fine for gaming. as far as the ram it's probably because there are different gauges of ram and things like speeds that play into the ram itself

why are you getting a micro-atx board?
just curious. i would suggest an atx, evga or foxconn w 590 chipset.
also, what latency is that ram?
are you going to overclock?
i like evga cards over XFX, but they are both great companies.

If you're staying with AMD, I would suggest you get the EVGA or Foxconn 590 chipset motherboard, along with the X2 3600+. That way, you can easily upgrade to the newer Phenom processors.

Here are the motherboards, that nagasama was talking about:
Newegg.com - Foxconn C51XEM2AA- 8EKRS2H Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
or
Newegg.com - EVGA 122-M2-NF59-TR Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Oh...and CorporalClegg...get this set of RAM instead:
Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
...they're better for the money.

I see you haven't picked a power supply yet. Heres what I suggest:
Newegg.com - XCLIO GREATPOWER X14S4P3 550W ATX12V 550W Power Supply 100-240V / 200-240V UL, CUL, TUV, CB, VDE, FIMKO, DEMKO, NEMKO, SEMKO - Retail
or
Buy.com - Corsair 520W SLI Certified Modular ATX Power Supply - CMPSU-520HX

good plan, take the money from the difference in price of cpu's, and use it to buy a MUCH better motherboard.

Also, do I need a sound card or anything else? If so, which should I get? I already have a mouse and keyboard and speakersn

That revised list, looks great!...You do not need a sound card. Most average users don't. The onboard sound of the motherboard is enough for most people, unless you're an audiophile.
