Should I spread the paste around the chip or just put the Heatsink on it. I am putting the paste like said on the AS5 Instruction PDF a straight | down the middle of the chip.

this has always worked for me. IMO less is better, but not to little.....

IT is a pain in the butt to mount a heatsink with the mobo in the case. You will probably want to take it out anyway. And yeah, get the tx-2 thermal paste.

Not to mention you risk grounding out something. I would definitely take everything out to install the HSF.

speaking of this, does anyone use those wrist strap things?

what are the real chances of having some type of static damage? what steps do you take to prevent this?

I've never once used one. Just make sure you touch something metal before touching anything inside your case.
