Before I begin, let me just say that I love these forums. I have been visiting them for about a year, and find them extremely informative. Until today I have not had anything to ask or add, so I didn't have an account.

I am pretty good with computers. I have built two computers in the past, and am getting ready to build my third.

I want to build a gaming PC. Something that will run any game I want to play very well. Something that is pretty future-proof. I don't want to have to upgrade anything for a long time (Maybe that will be impossible with the GPU.)

My problem is that I have not been keeping up with the newest computer components. I have no idea what to buy, and with how hectic my job is right now, I don't have the time to do a lot of research.

I loathe AMD, so I want an Intel processor.
I also want an Nvidia video card, I think the best for gaming is the 8800?
I have never over clocked anything in my life, but am willing to learn (as long as I can't destroy anything by screwing up.)
My spending limit is 1400-1600 dollars.

I basically would like for someone to post a build that fits in that price range for gaming. Keep in mind I play on a 22" Samsung 226bw, so the resolution is 1680x1050, I suppose I might need to upgrade to SLI, so I would like an SLI Mobo.

I can pick the case myself, but any suggestions are definitely welcome, especially since my house has no AC in the summer...so cooling an OCed processor might be a little tougher.

Also, XP vs Vista? I think I want to stick with XP, but am open minded, and wouldn't mind hearing a solid argument in favor of Vista.

Thank you for taking the time to read my essay  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's wrong with going xp?

It only has DirectX 9, and it's 64 bit flavor is atrocious :p

there's really nothing WRONG with it, it's just that Vista is the way to go, at least IMO.
It is the brand new Wolfdale 45nm Core2Duo,
it isn't suppose to be out till tommorow, but a couple vendors have been shipping early. Intel has the embargo set for the 20th I think so you will not see big etailers like newegg selling them yet. If your rig is primarily for gaming, that's the way to go, quads are the way to go for video editing rendering and stuff like that. The E8400 will blow away the Q6600 when it comes to gaming, since there aren't even any games out optimized for 4 core yet. The E8500 will be out in like a week. It offers a little higher clock speed and a .5 higher multiplier but at +$100, the E8400 is the sweet spot for price/performance.

About $1400

Not sure I would worry about SLI. I have almost the same setup running a 8800GTS 640 and score 13k+ on 3dMark06. With either 8800GT/S G92, should be a bit higher, your choice, do a bit of research. This MB supports Crossfire, which may be the way togo in the future, only time will tell. Vista is the way togo, but I would not go 64 bit. It is not supported enough yet. I have yet to have a problem with Vista and my new pc in my sig. The Q6600 will OC to 3.4-3.6GHz with not much problem on air. The 45nm Core2Duo would also be a good choice to check out. This setup should be a good future proof system. Just my suggestion.

go with that, why go dual-core at this point?'

EDIT: that was at 900's build

How can I tell if the Q6600 has G0 stepping before I buy? For instance, the one listed on Newegg does not say if it has it or not.

Can anyone confirm or deny how bad Vista actually is for gaming, and if it even worth going with DX10? I hear DX10 isn't much better than DX9 and the performance hit is pretty big. I will be playing CS:S, WoW, Call of Duty 4, Crysis, and more...so I was just curious how they run on Vista and if the graphics are really that much better on DX10.

Also, I see that the Memory is only 80$, should I get 4gb instead of 2gb? It's only 80$ more after all.

get the q6600 from ClubIT they guarantee it

we don't recommend 4gb to gamers, we usually recommend it for Visual Designers and CAD users
