what should i get? yep.. seen it a million times havent you?

i have been VERY out of the desktop pc loop for the past few years. im no stranger to building them etc, but am now in the blue when it comes to all of the new hardware out.

my budget is about $1,000 (not including monitor, speakers, etc. i have all of that. just the tower).

how much better of a machine could i get if i saved for a while longer and spent aobut $1,500 on the tower? is it worth waiting & saving?

the main reason i want the machine is for gaming. however, it will also be used sparsely for small web dev and .NET projects when im working at home.

i do not want a tv tuner card or any high end dvd stuff. i hate watching dvd's on the computer & dont have the desire to record anything to dvd either. just need a regular cd-rom burner.

my main questions involve storage, processors, and graphics cards.

is RAID worth fooling with for a desktop entertainment machine?

so far i was thinking of an asus A8N-SLI delux/premium for the board. that's about as far as i've got. :) how much ram is necessary for todays games? (system ram, not video card). i wanted to go with 2gb..

if nobody replies to this i wont be upset. i know how annoying these questions get.

Any interest in overclocking? If so, I would get a DFI board. The DFI nF4 Ultra-D is a good choice. Around 130 bucks at newegg.com. Then pair it up with an AMD 64 3500+ or 3700+ , make sure to get either the Vience or San Diego core.

I would suggest the eVGA 6800GS for a video card. Either that or an eVGA 7800GT. It's up to you.

You can probably find a nice 250GB SATA hard drive for around 100 bucks.

Check that link out for a HD.

Might as well give you links to all the parts I talked about.

Thanks sickness. The video cards are my main concern.
I have no real interest in overclocking. :)

This is what I would do with that money:

CPU- AMD64 3200+ Venice- $165
Mobo- eVGA sli mobo (free with 7800 GT)
Ram- gigaram 2GB (2x1GB)- $165
Hard Drive- Western Digital 250GB SATA II- $100
Power Supply- OCZ Modstream 520W- $100
Video Card- eVGA 7800 GT- $380
Sound Card- Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic- $120

Total without Shipping- $1030

This would make for a hell of a system.

You don't even have to get the X-Fi sound card if you want to save some more money. Could probably get it under $1,000.

Even though you're not interested in DVD's, you might read this:

I could be wrong (probably) but can't you use a DVD-RAM for storage? Like 8.5 gigs? If you're interested in storage, that is very portable. It might only be for DVD's though, i'm not sure...

Yes, but the problem is, once its burned, its burned. Unlike a big hard drive in which you can store and delete whatever you want. Dont get me wrong its still a good idea!

You should consider getting a dual layer DVD burner. They are cheap, like $45 shipped.

Get 2 gigs of RAM as it's pretty much the standard for todays games.

is 2 gigs really the standard? ive read that 1gig is the standard and 2 is going overboard.. guess i was wrong
