I'd recommend getting an SSD to put your OS on and using the other drive for storage.

Kind of depends on your budget; generally SSD's are more expensive in terms of GB of storage per dollar. How much more would you be willing to spend?

That would work. As long as the OS fits on the SSD the computer should run faster.
