Friend just built, not powering on, help!

What slot does he have his RAM seated in? It should be in the orange slot closest to the CPU.

anyways, he gave up for now and is just gonna rma the mobo and cpu and try again next weekend

He most likely doesn't have to RMA the cpu. They are the highest quality part in your computer and are the least likely to fail/be DOA.

yeah but he's worried he screwed it up when he put on the heatsink, and it just seems easier if he can send them both at the same time so he should be good to go when they return, no matter what

Putting too much thermal paste on a cpu wont ruin it

yeah not that part, but he said he was like really pressing hard on it when installing the heatsink... i told him i doubt he ruined it, but meh
even if HE didnt ruin it, there's no such thing as a defective cpu?

I'm assuming he used the stock heatsink and with those, you will be putting a lot of pressure on the cpu to get it on. Defective cpu are extremely rare. I have never heard of someone getting a defective cpu.

yeah he used the stock one cuz he couldnt figure out the xigmatek rifle (i told him how to do it after)
