Its been a long day and I was unsure thats why I put "think" 65nm was the Q6600 I am too lazy to look it up everytime

If I were you I would get a new case for that dell, put your RAID in there and make that into a server for your media, this way you can put a single disk in the media machine which will help reduce the noise and power consumption of the media machine as well as openning up your choice of smaller, better looking cases. As a side effect, it would increase the availability of your media and files and it would put the dell to good use. Win win heh.

Power costs? Lian li cases are well insulated they don't make much noise pretty much anything they can do to reduce noise they do do even triple layering the panels in some cases.

Which reminds me meant to post this earlier its a mid tower rather then full tower case but you have cut quite a few bits out so doesn't really matter. Was going to get that case before I decided on my monster.

any reason to get the UD3P mobo with 2 PCIe 2.0 slots?

that's a sweet lian case, newegg doesn't sell it i guess? yea, quiet but good cooling is key...

It has great cooling you would struggle to get better in such a small package that is soundproofed aswell.

No as you won't be using dual gpu's so don't need the added slot.

well ill have to shop around for cases and see which i like best, but you've got me on a good start.... what about video cards? seems you guys always downgrade them if we're not playing games... what would be a solid choice for this setup? i think you mentioned this one earlier:

i saw ASUS and sapphire both make the 4830 too?

All of those companies are reputable, I'd probably go with Sapphire over Power Color which I would take over ASUS... no real differences, just check the warranties and prices

I've been out of the tech loop for a while... but 4850 and 4870's are the cards to aim for?

Graphics cards are all delivered by nvidia to manufacturers like asus and evga or sparkle who normally just stick there label on the stock cooler and sell it on. General rule go with the cheapest unless there is one close to the price with better extras e.g. aftermarket cooler, warranty, free game or free shipping. Your not a gamer so won't need the power of the 4850. Get this one cheapest and has a hdmi port so you can plug straight into your tv and get video and audio which I assume this pc is going to plugged into

yea i just realized that had an HDMI port which is a nice perk, good suggestion.

so what should i look for as far as RAM goes? i know about timing e.g. 4-4-4-12, etc. and the lower the better.... should i run 8gb with 4x2gb or is 4gb total plenty and i should run 2x2gb? any suggestions.
