This is a mediocre setup (in relative terms) that I would probably construct at this time. However, I won't be building anything for another 6 months, so I am posting to figure out if this budget will do me good. (In otherwords, the parts will be slightly better in 6 months, but I'll spend the same amount of money).

Budget: $700-800 US

80 GB should be ok for my needs. I'll probably only be playing one game during a given time frame. I am not hardcore.

Do you think I should go with a single 1 GB stick instead, I might add another 1 GB later.

PSU:

Mobo:

This is the only category I am really clueless on... for the most part.
Optical Drive:

Could care less, as long as it isn't really slow.

Total w/out case:

$ 717.93

Will this build do me good for moderate gaming?

Your budget is very similar to mine, except mine is about 150 less. This is what I figured to with for mine:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 $180.00

WD 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache $69.99

eVGA GeForce 7900GS 256MB $169.99

Foxconn Socket T

G.SKILL 1GB DDR2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231085

Total Price: $635 before shipping.

I believe this build is superior to yours, especially for the money, except maybe the video card. I also have no PSU in this, but I'm sure you can get a PSU and upgraded video card from what I listed to fit into this build under $800.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas as to what to get.

You're probably right. I've been out of the game (pun) for a while now.

How does the E6300 compare to the Athlon 64 X2 4200 AM2?

Yea, i bought the 4200 x2 about a month before the c2d came out and i wish that i had waited a little longer -.-, amd is a few laps behind intel right now lol

AMD wont having anything to compete withe C2D until Q3 of 2007 and by then Intel's 45nm technology will be out
