I plan to run linux (probably Ubuntu) and want to be able to play some decent (older) games at high quality, but i don't care about the latest commercial games as much... I play games like tremulous, nexuiz, world of padman, neverwinter nights, maybe second life. This build would be good for those games on high(ish) graphics settings right? Right now I own a first gen macbook, so this would be a MAJOR step up from it's onboard intel gpu. I don't really want to spend a lot of money, I think what I have is about the limit for mid-range parts...for example, the next step up for a graphics card is around $250. I don't want to spend that much. I chose the e8400 despite the price because it seems like a bargain and I won't have to replace it for a long time. All this hardware seems to have good reviews for Linux users where I checked, if anyone knows of potential problems please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Looks good, but that psu doesn't have many amps. I suggest getting the 500w Thermaltake. Also, get the as5, not the ceramic. I have had better luck with it.

scratch that:

get this.
Newegg.com - Antec earthwatts EA500 ATX12V v2.0 500W Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, FCC, TUV, CE, CB, C-tick, CCC - Retail
combine it with the 7600gt and you will get another $30 off, im not done.
sign up to neweggs subscribtion(its free) and enter this promo code: EMCABCCBF and that will take another $15 off.

Im not sure how the 7600gt is compared to the 8600gts, but thats a great deal i just gave you an a better psu with good savings, and not to forget that there is still $50 in rebates too.

EDIT: if you dont want the 7600gt, you could still get the 8600gts , but get that antec psu and the coupon code will still work.

That is a great deal, is there enough difference for my dated games (most are quake3 based) to justify getting the 8600gts over the 7600gt?

well the gts is way better thatn the 7600gt, so you could still get the gts, but get the psu so you get that discount and plus antec is a better pbrand than the one you posted.
check this thread for ranking to get a better idea:

Graphics card Rankings

if you wanna add a little more money and get a better card, i would suggest getting the ati 3850 256mb.

I want to stay away from ati because of their poor linux support. I think I will get that power supply you mentioned and the 8600gts. Thanks. (I've updated the first post)
