Is there any way I could do this without a router and still keep it off my family's wireless network? Getting a router into my room would be difficult.

You can buy a wireless n router from wal mart or create an ad hoc network

Would an ad-hoc network still allow someone access to the family-used network though? Is there a way to keep them quarantined from one another?

You can link the two computers together with ad-hoc only. Or, use a non-internet connected router...

That is a good point about the router. I'm still confused about the ad-hoc network tho? From what I read, it seems that it will keep your real network separated from the ad-hoc network so that any viruses, etc. can't get to the real wireless network.

Would anyone have any recommendations of using 2 laptops vs. one laptop with different virtual machines??
