Ultra psu's can be good. I had a 550 watt powering my old system for about 2 years and still works fine.

In gaming they pretty similar really, the phenom 940 is better because it is a cheaper solution then the intel. But you are right, i thought the phenoms outperformed the q9 series in most tests seems its pretty close but the 9s usually out on top.
