Yes, it is better. So is SCART, which is the UK standard, but while an s-video plug is conveniently PS/2 sized, scart is huuuge. I believe S-video is widely used in Japan as well. Its not uncommon here, just not standard.
 
just a note, s-video does not support HD, nor does composite

component will take you up to 1080i, as will dvi

HDMI is currently the only way to display true 1080p

so to answer the one question, s-video is mostly a moot point, aside from hooking it up to a regular TV for playing around or watchin reg definition dvd movies.
 
I am still hoping I can get my two GTX's for 40 dollars!

If not I will probably buy an 8700GTS

hmm, it says my monitor supports 1080p but it only comes with VGA cable
