seems good chip.. but id still say go quad as more and more software will utilise it.. plus next step is nehalem.. even more cores. So i think your futureproofing yourself more.. core2duo will become weak after a while and have not much of a resell value.

Also depends on how demanding 2008 games will be.

XD 4.7 is a nice clock but I'd still take a 4.0Quad over it anyday. Just me though.

q6600 can still get to 3.6 quite easy on air, so they still the best way to go

Wow, who would need such a powerful CPU? I think that even the E6600 is sufficient enough for some hard calculations for home/office work. But maybe for major businesses that requires a lot of calculations or what not, then it may be worth it.

if you put it that way then you just need a pentium 4.

The e6600 was 260 when it came out and the new e8500 will be 260 as well. Just replacing an old product.

I doubt games will be quad-core in 2008. Just recently games are dual-core optimized, not even crysis is quad-core optimized yet.

Looks like time to upgrade to the evil side....

Wouldn't Phase Shift cooling push a q6600 to at least 4.5ghz?

yes most likely, but that's hardly a viable 24/7 cooling option.

E8400 3.0GHz will be priced at $180

There is no reason to pay an extra $80 for just 0.16GHz increase in clock speed

...assuming it clocks the same (which it should)
