Dual or tri chanl RAM?

I am looking at setting up a i7 system, and it seems that I can use either dual chanl or tri chanl RAM with an i7. Is this true? If so is there a huge diff between the 2 in performance?

There is no difference in the ram, it just means it splits the amount of ram you have into 3 parts. So its best to have 3gb, 6gb, or 12gb; with 6gb being the sweet spot pretty much.
