Default Dual Core vs. Dual Processor

Is there a real difference? Right now I have two Intel 3.0Ghz Xeon processors with a 2MB cache.

Yes there is. I believe dual proccesors are slower but better for servers. The reason they are slower is because all the information has to compute with the 2 processors where as dual core is all on one die. So you would see better performance from a dual core.

Or it might be something else, alls I remember is dual core is better then dual processors.

yeah but the time it would take to go through two cpu's instead of one dual core, in my eyes, would be completly unnotacable...

Hmm yea I think it has to do with that though I'm not sure. But some benchmarks are on here http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/...gle/index.html
The dual core wins in like everything except bandwith.

the difference between the current design of intel's dual cores vs. dual intel processors won't be that noticeable at all. because intel's dual cores have more in common with dual processor systems than AMD's concept of a dual core system.

well you can always get two dual cores, get the best of both sides .

lol. thanx. i don't think they sell dual core Xeons though. well, at least not on Newegg. Yep, i do plan on using this mainly as a server, but with the help of a X1900XTX video card and 2GB of dual channel RAM, i'm hoping the gaming on this will be pretty decent too

sorry to dissapoint but i don't think you will get that much out of gaming given that the xeon isn't optimised for gaming and is only clocked at 3.0ghz. at least not until games have better SMP support. they do make dual core xeons, they just tend to spontaneously combust and that makes them hard to find
