I got 8340 on my rig with:
AMD Opteron 148 @2915MHz
1x1GB Mushkin eXtreme Performance
eVGA 7800GT CO @220MHz/1220MHz

I got somewhere in the 7000's with everything the same but my video card was at the stock 470MHz/1200MHz. OC that video card a little bit and you will see that score bump up a good deal.

my card is at 425/1053 right now according to everest. how much do you think i would need to OC that to get the score to "bump up a good deal", and would it be possible with my stock cooling?

I think your CPU is holding you back. OC it to 2.4/6/8 GHz and your score should raise.
3Dmark05 score has little bearing on CPU power...FX-57 should only score a few hundred points more than a 3000+

So when your video card was stock at 470/1200, you got 7000, but when it was at 220/1220, you get 8300??
Not 7000 flat. I said somewhere in the 7000's. I may actually have it written down somewhere..yup. When I had it at 470/1200 my score was 7649. Bumped my clocks to 520/1220 and got 8340.
