also, what's the major difference between the opterons and the athlon cpu's?

The only reason you should look at opterons is because you plan on overclocking. They're higher grade CPUs that are picked out specially because they can take the stress that servers have to deal with daily. The Athlon is slightly cheaper and targeted for the Home PC user. The other difference is that those opterons have a 1mb L2 cache, IF I remember right.
