Hi guys,

I'm about to buy a PC mainly for gaming, but on a £1000 net budget and face a few choices:

1. CPU
- Pentium D 940, or
- Athlon 64 DualCore X2 4600+

I'm pretty lame with technology, but so far i thought its the clock that matters. D 940 is 3.2 GHz whereas Athlon is sth like 2.4 or 2.2 (not sure) but browsing through the internet sites about PCs i seem to get an idea they are pretty much comparable. Is that so? If not, which one is better?

2. Graphics
- 512MB GeForce 7900GTX
- 512MB Radeon X1800xT

With those i'm lost completely. Any of them better than the other? Does it matter with which CPU they go?

Please help.

Honestly if you can, then forget all of those parts and get an intel core 2 duo e6300 for your CPU, and get an x1900GT or a 7900GT for your Video card.

If you must choose these then go for the athlon and the nvidia

It can be overclocked to the same speeds, and it's cheaper (if you go for the core 2 duo you're gonna need extra money for a supported mobo/RAM)

It's pretty easy, there are guys over at the overclocking forums here that could help you out, even without overclocking though I believe the 7900GT is better value for money :)

yeah, get the 7900... it overclocks to as fast as cards $150 more expensive.
i like my x2, but i hear the core2duo is better. :/
