Yes, but stock vs. stock and mild overclock vs. mild overclock, the E8400 will get things done faster for now. Even when rendering video etc, the E8400 and E8500 beat out the Q6600 stock vs. stock. Normally I would recommend the Q6600 hands down, but he does pose a good point. If he doesn't plan on doing virtual machines or having 15 programs running at once, I think the dual core may be his best option.

Unless the Q6600 is cheaper, at which point that would be the obvious choice regardless of future plans for upgrading.

I am not opposed to overclocking and may take on the challenge. Right now the best price difference I can find is about 15-20 more for the q6600. Also, I am not a huge multitasker. This is a gaming rig that will be also used for outputting videos to a TV display (not simultaneously as game play). Along with that the mundane items such as websurfing, Word, Excel and such.

How about something along these lines?

E8400(200ish)
Tuniq Tower 120(45)
Asus Maximus Formula(150ish)
Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2-1000 (150ish)
Two HD3870s!!!(300ish)
Corsair 650VX(130ish?)
A 22" LCD should be around 350 for a good one.
CM690
WD2500AAKS(65)

because usually when you get over 800mhz they up the timings and considering you can overclock the 800mhz set to 1000 or more there is no point to get the 1000, it will save you money if you get the 800mhz set and just oc.

Again, I always ask, why the rifle over the Tuniq?
