On board sound or PCI card?

well the only thing that i'll really be using it for is listening to music and hopefully getting good sound quality out of games, which it seems like i would.

The audio on my P35-DS3R chip works perfectly for me when I listen to music and play games. I can't really tell how the sound could actually be better. The sound quality would also be impacted by the type of speaker you have.

As long as you've got good speakers, onboard should be fine. My advice is to hook it all up and then see how you like it. If you still want it better, for for an X-fi.

I have the XtremeMusic card, and it is significantly better than onboard.

Though I'm in the process of trying to get my hands on some LM4562 OpAmps to replace the ones on my card. People have said that it makes a significant improvement to the sound quality
