For gaming, the better GFX card would be of bigger importance than a better CPU. I agree, you can't go wrong with the Opteron!

7600GT CO Superclocked > Geforce 6 series

It's only owned by the 7900's (speaking strictly of Nvidia only).

The x1800xt isnt that bad for the price.

But I agree...go for the 7900GT.

EDIT: how much difference would a 7900GT make over a 7600GT...

also..which 7900GT or 7600GT is the best..
cuz when i look at the 7600GT's theres one that says "KO" on it and then theres one that says it has a higher clock speed and one thats just regular with way more reviews and cheaper....

this looks like a good one for the 7900GT

yeah that eVGA 7900GT CO is a great deal.

And it will be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the 7600gt

Well, I couldn't really get him to budge on the video card, so he's going to get a better cpu and more ram.

Here is the final list, so, besides the video card, are there any other recommendations you can offer?

Video Card: XFX GeForce 7600GT $155
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ $168
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4-F $80
Memory: 2GB Corsair XMS (1GB x 2) $130
Hard Drive: Personal Preference $60
Disc Drive: DVD Burner $40
Case: Personal Preference $30
Power Supply: Antec SmartPower 2.0 500watts $60
Operating System: Windows XP Home OEM $80
Total: $813, includes shipping (where applicable)

Completed 1st System:
Case...Antec Super LanBoy $30
PSU...Antec SP2.0 500W $50
Mobo...MSI K8N Neo4-F $85
CPU...Athlon 64 3200+ Venice $162
Video...EVGA GeForce 6800 GS $196
Memory...OCZ 1GB (512MB x 2) $60
Hard Drive...Hitachi 80GB $20
Gaming without lag...priceless.

i still think that the 6800gs is the way to go
Especially if u have AGP.

Then it can unlock to 16 pipelines + 6 vertex
