Default Benefits of 2GB for a non-gamer?

Is there any increase in Windows and application performance that comes from an upgrade to 2GB of RAM?, or is 2GB only for gamers. I am declining as a gamer but I am as into computers as I have ever been. I would think 1GB would be fine for about all non-gaming uses, but I just want some opinions on it.
