That's the key.

A good sound card will have a much better signal to noise ratio, and much lower distortion than any onboard sound card could ever dream of. However, if your speakers are not up to par, it won't matter.

Though you can get some good headphones for significantly less price than good speakers.
something from Audio Technica (ATH-AD700's are very good), Beyerdynamic (DT231's are good for the price), AKG or Alessandro
