but there are so many versions of linux its hard to pick the right one.

I've been told Ubuntu is the one to use first, as it's very user friendly. It's a good choice for beginners.

Redhat is supposed to be good also, but its no longer free

I'm probably going to use Ubuntu on my e6400 build, because I need the Windows from that build, for my Q6600.

With the right tools, you should be able to customize it, the way you want.

what ive done since i have windows xp and i wanted a more vista look without paying much for it was go out and get the vista transformation pack from Mr. Win X and windows blinds, windows blinds is only 20 USD and i have a computer that works almost excatly like vista, even with the search bar on the start menu however it is still windows xp

I would just stick with the good ol' Windows XP taskbars, start menu's, etc.
