I read that AM2 socket is a 940 pin socket.

Well I thoght AMD has has a socket 940 socket out for a while.

So whats the difference?

i'm pretty sure AM2 is a 940 pin socket but with a different pinout. in other words they shifted a few pins around so you can't stick a current cpu in. electrically it will act different as well because you don't need to change the number of pins to improve the platform
