Is an am2 4600+ worth the extra over a 4200+?

No. The performance isn't that much better to warrant the price (as with all other CPUs)

The lowest CPU is usually the best price/performance.

agreed, but you might want to look at the AM2 4000. The L2 Cache is 2x1MB which performance wise is better than the 3800/4200 or 4600, all of which is 2x512kb
