In my opinion its not worth it to upgrade my card at the current moment, sure GPUs are cheap now adays but the performance jump isn't worth it from a 8800 gtx to a say gtx 260 or a HD 4750 ( less then 50% performance jump ). Currently I plan to wait at least another year or something along the lines of that for another generation of GPUs to come out or the prices to lower on the existing GPUs.

Its worth the jump...trust me.
You can sell that 8800GTX and get a core 216 and you will absolutely love it.
That 8800GTX aint gonna last another year..its already been two and its showing its age when a 8800GT can outperform it.

I appreciate your opinion because it offers a view at the flip side of things, but I would have to still disagree. I mean I consider myself a high end PC gamer and with a history of video cards ( started off with a 9800 pro, then after 2.5 years I upgraded to a x800 xl, and then after 1.5 years I went with a 8800 gtx ). Toms hardware a while back had a really good article with break downs of video cards fitting into particular tiers and I agreed with their opinion that you should only upgrade if the video card fits 3 tiers above the current one you had, and the current high end cards are still only 2 brackets above a 8800 gtx ( the latest bracket 4870, gtx280, gtx260 etc ) and the 2nd to last bracket is a 4850, 9800 etc which really isn't that far off from a 8800 gtx.
Also concerning your statement about a 8800 gt, I agree they scale really well in SLI, but after all the benchmarks I've seen ( a lot ) I wouldn't really say a 8800 gt can outperform a 8800 gtx. Sure it runs more efficient and with the cooling ( hence has more overclocking potential ), but at stock settings the 8800 gtx still barely comes on top in most of the tests ( shown to have a 5%-10% higher performance, oh and its also listed higher in the http://www.techist.com/forums/f76/graphics-card-rankings-139202/ thread ).
PS: I think the 8800 gtx can squeeze out another year...I mean heck I can play farcry 2 at high settings and get 35-40 fps, other more demandng games like Crysis and Fallout 3 require a tone down in graphics to get achieve the same fps, but not by that much ( medium-high settings ). I would only recommend upgrading to the "maniac" hardcore graphic card people who seem to have a bottomless wallet.

If you keep the 8800GTX and try to sell it a year from now i bet you wont be able to get anymore than $50 for it.
The only reason the 8800GTX comes out above the 8800GT in some cases is the extra vram and shaders. But yes it really can outperform it...i get more ppd in F@H than most 8800GTX's. And the 8800GT can oc much higher since its G92 not G80.
Im just trying to give my best advice. You can get a cooler running card, which overclocks very well and has superior cooling by letting the GTX go. And Toms Hardware has been going slightly downhill lately. I keep up to date with hardware as the others here do and yes the 4850 is just that good.

ricanflow is completely right... a GPU upgrade is definitely worth it... when it comes to numbers and theory, there's not much of an improvment... but when you put the 8800GTX side by side with modern cards in real world test, the 8 series card just dies... i mean it was a sweet GPU when it came out, but every card has its heyday and the 8800GTX's is long over... i recommend a 4850 or 4870 (this one's lookin nice, factory OC and a sweet cooler -> Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H485QT512P Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ4 Turbo Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards)

Hmmm I never really consider selling hardware a good idea since I'm not very keen on selling methods like ebay and such, nor do I ever buy used hardware. Anyways if your giving me the advice to sell my 8800 GTX, why aren't you upgrading as well? Regardless of all the 8800 gt vs 8800 gtx arguments, even if the 8800 gt does overclock better then the 8800 gtx it can at least be agreed upon that their within 10% performance from eachother both stocked or both overclocked, thus putting us in the same category graphic card wise.
On a side note its pretty amazing that single slot cooler cards can keep cards cooler then dual slot cooler cards, I know the chips are smaller and use less power and all, but still you think the dual slot cooler cards would offer at least a good amount of cooling.
PS: How would selling my card work since EVGA only offers a lifetime warranty and not a double life time warranty?
That list is just retarded ( I guess I take back my Toms hardware recommendation as of now ), the 8800 Ultra is within 10% performance of the 8800 gtx but they list it as 2 steps above? Also doesn't the 9600 and 3870 totally suck
psssht also I would but a gtx 280 and a HD 4870 x2 in the same tier, their performance is too closeI'm not sure I understand, I always go by benchmark numbers ( games fps and synthetic tests ) and the 8800 gtx has been about 40-50% slower then a ati 4850, so what do you mean by side by side comparison test?
