Well, the title says it all, are aftermarket GPU coolers really worth it?

For me, I'm getting the 8800gts 640. Now, I'll be doing some moderate-heavy overclocking, so is the stock cooler good enough, or should I invest in an aftermarket one?

Thanks, as always.

You should consider the temps after the overclocking. An aftermarket cooler will be quieter and more efficient thus keeping the card cooler.

They do not make aftermarket coolers for no reason. IMO ther should be no need to OC an 8800gts but if you do the stock coolers are pretty darn good for such a hot card.

As stated aftermarket coolers allow you to get higher overclocks on your card while remaining pretty cool, not only that they are usually quieter than stock. it's up to you really if you think you want or need one.

r u planning to overclock ur gts? i think their stock hsf was pretty good too, but they run hot. if o/c its better to get an AM HSF, dont take the risk out ruining ur card with stock
