what about a laptop style power supply? for a small rig it would be external and fanless...

You could still have a ground buzz with a laptop style power supply. I had one with my old laptop.

Seems like most of the component recommendations here point to Newegg as the go to source.

I have been doing a little more digging and I found this ITX board by GigaByte:

GIGABYTE GA-D525TUD Intel Atom D525@ 1.8GHz 1M L2 cache BGA559 Intel NM10 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo

It has a full PCI slot.

What do you think of this one?

I found that too, but the Atom is freakin slow.

This is why I am here. Looks good to me on paper, but I have no personal or practical knowledge of what is good or bad or "slow".

So should I look more closely at the mATX boards? Any recommendations?

You could get an i3 + cheap H61 board. Lemme build one real quick.

Ok here is what I have so far within your budget. Still small, and if you ever need extra GPU horsepower you have room for that.

CPU:
Newegg.com - Intel Core i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX80637i33220

Motherboard:
Newegg.com - MSI H61M-P31 (G3) LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

RAM:
Newegg.com - CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory Model CMV8GX3M2A1600C11

SSD:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC064B/WW 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Case + PSU:
Newegg.com - TOPOWER TP-1687BB-300 Black SECC 0.8mm MicroATX Desktop Computer Case 300W SFX Power Supply

DVD:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA Model SH-222BB/BEBE - CD / DVD Burners

Just add your OS (64bit) and you're good to go. It has an IGP that does quite well with basic tasks and even some accelerated tasks since you wont game or anything.

Thanks everyone for your replys. Special thanks to PP Mquire for his time to put together a detailed build list. Now I can order the recommended components and feel confident they will fit the case and then boot when powered on.
