I know it's been posted about before but I couldn't find the answer quickly, what is it that makes the 512Mb edition better than the 640mb?

Re: 8800gts 640 vs 8800gts 512

Fixed the title for you.

What makes the 512 better, is that it's based on the G92, unlike the 640 on the G80. The G92 enables all of the 128 stream processors, while the 640 only has 96/112 SPs enabled. In addition, the 512 is higher clocked than the 640. And also uses a smaller fabrication process, so it runs cooler than the 640.

Evga made both: the 640 SSC used the G80 and 112 stream processors I believe, as well as being heavily overclocked (I think it was a last gasp 'squeeze the GTS for all its worth before G92 arrives').

They have since released a 512 SSC, which is just an overclocked 512

Cool...that's what I was looking for...so I guess the higher prices (the links above I just grabbed randomly and it just happens that the 640 is on sale) of the 640mb is for those who don't know any better?

You could say the 640MB version is for those who don't know any better -even the 8800GT will smack it around for less than $200

if you get some after market cooling and volt mod the thing, you pretty much transform that GT into a GTS, minus a couple of SPs of course, but that's not a big deal

Not really. It's because they have to sell the old stock. Ever since the GT came out, people stopped buying the old GTSs. So they had to close the gap between the GT and old stock of GTS, to get it to sell.

I saw your post earlier gurusan, but doesn't the SSC still use the G80?

There are 2 SSC models, the AR and the A3. The OP linked to the A3 revision (look at the model number) which uses the 112 SP g92 chip yet still retains the 320bit memory interface and 640mb ram.

In short, the the 112sp 640mb 8800GTS is better than the 8800GTS 512mb, IMO.

However, the description on the item in the link says 96 sp and shows the specs for the older 8800gts....yet the title says "112 SP" and the model number says the A3 revision. So I would double check with customer service as to which one you are getting before you order.

im pretty sure the all 112 SP GTS model uses the G80 core, the difference is one comes bundled with Crysis
