My thoughts for doing this:
I'm paying very little for the card with professional vmods done to it by a competent and well known person.
It is true that for a tiny bit more I could get a 9800gtx,+,gts250 1gb, gtx260, gtx280, gtx285, gtx295, gtx295 mars edition from asus.
When does it stop?
The truth is, even at 1900x1200... I didn't use my 4850 crossfire for much more intensive games then stalker clear skies and crysis/warhead. After playing them... my single 4850 (Now at stock again) handles all other games just fine...
I'm preparing for dx11 as well. No point paying more for "future games" when I want to play them in dx11 later anyway...
@ Vernong, I sold both 8800gt's long ago, getting great deals for both of them at the time. I don't normally keep extra cards long. The 4850 probably will go soon.
I also have a 9800gt sitting behind me from xfx right now... But it's for a client
(I guess you could say that). I considered asking him if he wanted a free upgrade to a 4850, but I don't have a dremel or the other stuff with me... In the long run it takes less work and money to get the final result.
A heavily overclocked 8800gt that folds like a beast and lets me game.
If I just screwed up.. at least I only spent the small amount I am paying rather then putting out $200 for a gtx260 with ram sinks, the gt200 bracket for my mcw60 and so on.
