this is pretty much like when the 7900gt came out and was between the 256mb gtx and 512mb gtx

Well the gtx and ultra only had 328 bit memory interface if i recall correctly. I'm pretty sure they made some optimizations to the way the memory works so that they could go with a much cheaper 256bit interface. That or the 328bit interface was way more than needed.
