8800 GTS vs 8600 GTS

I know, the 8800 kills the 8600, but listen up!

I don't want to spend the redundant amount of $280 for the 8800 GTS when I don't need that much ammunition when THE most harshest program I'll use is CS:S, every now and then photoshop.

Since I'm going to be mostly around media encoding/decoding, I heard the 8600 is better for it, should I get spend $280 for the 8800 and wait until a Service Pack for Windows comes out and put it to better use then, or get the 8600 now with XP for $160?

if your only gona use CSS just get the 8600gts, its almost as good as the 7600gt, so it should do fine if you wana do any other games...

Yes...I believe the 8500/8600 series are better at media encoding/decoding, with their Purevideo2 engine over the Purevideo of the higher end 8 series.(Is this correct?). It will handle CSS easily, and it is better than the 7600GT.

yeah the 8800 is overkill. just get an 8600 that way if u decide to go vista later on youll have enough cash to throw in another 2 gigs of ram.

On average, 8600GTS is as good as 7900GS, if not better

its actually significantly better for the $30 price difference
GT = core clock 620
GTS = core clock 675

GT = memory clock 1600
GTS = memory clock 2000

I own a 8600GTS and it is great value for money.

I used ATITool to overclock it and got:
808mhz core at 76 degrees C
1167mhz memory at 76 degrees C

I did have an exhaust working on the card when I did it tho, knocked off about 5 degrees C.

I overclock it at 700/1045 when I play games, video edit, etc.

Get high 190s FPS on CS:S video stress test.

apparently it doesn't actually work lol the decoding is rawt with errors so I would say a 7 series card instead
