This is because id loves to put very detailed and high res textures in ultra mode.
Actually the biggest texture in quake 4 is only 512x512. The extra memory is because in ultra mode the textures are un compressed 32bit images. In UT2004 for example, the biggest texture is 2048x2048, but it uses DXT3 compression, but you can hardly tell the difference between a raw image and a dxt3 image.

Thank you for correcting me 003. The reason why in that test the 7900GT beats the X1800XT is because Soft Shadows are on. Nvidia has always been somewhat better with shadows, soft shadows is also why the 512MB version of the X1800XT is performing better then the 256 version. The problem with soft shadows is that they kill performance for something you won't notice that much unless your looking closely. Most people (except people with X1900s and 7900GTXs) keep soft shadows off and jack up the eye candy and AA. Soft shadows aren't that great.

Yea GR, sorry but I don't know where you got the idea that the 7800GTX 512 gained performance by the extra memory. The 512mb of memory was there to prevent bottlenecking at higher resolutions, but if they took a 7800GTX 256 and doubled the memory, performance would only be higher by maybe 2-5FPS at the most on higher resolutions if your lucky.

X1900XT(X)=7900GTX<7900GT<7800GTX=X1800XT<7800GT=X1800XL

Wait, are those <'s supposed to be going the other way? Cos I thought a 7900GTX was better than a 7900GT.
