deoden pci-e cards havent even started to saturate the agp bus bandwith so why is agp obselete? actually its pci graphics cards that are obselete which is why we moved to agp in the first place, although you meant to say pci-e. Also he would have to spend the $50 + a whole new system like mobo, cpu, ram etc so i think this card will keep him alive until he's out of college.

i think the best nvidia card for agp is the 7950gt 550/1300.

For $20 more you can get this Newegg.com - XFX PVT71AYDF3 GeForce 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

its core is 550 compared to 450
and mem is 1300 compared to 1200
you also get double the ram
seems like a good dea for $20 more right?

if your not pro nvidia you could also check out the x1950pro
Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H195PRQT256DDAN-R-V2 Radeon X1950PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X IceQ 3 Turbo HDCP Video Card - Retail 256 ver.
Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H195PRQT512DDAN-R-V2 Radeon X1950PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X IceQ 3 Turbo HDCP Video Card - Retail 512 ver.

or x1950xt
Newegg.com - GECUBE HX195XTGA3-D3 (R) Radeon X1950XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X HDCP Video Card - Retail

although i would like to see some benchmarks first before i would recommend one to you, but i will say this if you are going to be playing at higher res you should get a 512mb version
or x1950xt

seriously...

The guy wants an AGP card. Don't make him dump an extra $160 into his pc for a few more fps. (cpu bottlenecking would cap the GTS anyway)

depends on what kind of cpu he has, if so he could just turn up the aa and af to offload more work to the gpu or oc his cpu some more

the eVGA one is 512MB, has 560 core, and 1450 mem, and costs $229 Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P2-N635-AR GeForce 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 KO Video Card - Retail
the X1950 Pro's don't perform as well, and the XT's use considerably more power.

The X1950XT is the most powerful card in AGP. GECUBE will also be releasing DX10 card in AGP they have already stated.

The only card worth an upgrade in AGP over a 7800GS is the X1950XT..however you could get an open box version and a newboard for the same exact price.

dont upgrade unless you have too.....not everyone has excessive amounts of money to dump into gaming every 6 months in order to stay on top of the industry. I used an AGP rig up until last month with a 7800GS and athlon 3400 and it ran every game great. I would stick with the 7950GT agp.

The X1950XT will beat a 7950GT and its 512 memory at any standard resolution by a good bit...especially at around 1280x968.

Still the 7800GS isn't a "bad" card and I would hold off a little longer and finally make the switch to PCI-E as you are just kicking yourself in the face for paying so much every time for a new AGP card that can handle new games.
