Well your friend is definitely wrong, the 7800 series is better then the 6800 series (duh). As for your purchase if you want the 7800 gt by all means go for it. I prefer to update my card to a medium class card more regularily rather then spend tons on a super high end one (so id probably go for a 6800 gtx). If you have the cash though by all means go for it.
