There is a free version and pro version. Pro version just includes some extras like cd ripping and stuff. Winamp is easily the best media player available.

I have always been able to disable the music in the game then alt+tab (or any other method of getting to the desktop) and open Windows Media Player. I haven't ever had any problems running music behind games on 3ghz P4 1g Ram and WMP 11. Sorry about adding to the hijacking.
