In some cases it is better, in others it isn't..

In some cases the 4870 was better then a single gtx280, It doesn't make sense to me that gtx 280 sli > 4870x2 x2.

Who Knows, perhaps because drivers are good enough yet, or even if they were, games handle 4 GPU's badly because they aren't coded for it..

well i dont know much about AMD are the Phenom Black Edition the only good ones
