Default 4870x2 overkill?

im going to help my friend build his gaming rig budget is not an issue all parts are selected except for the gpu. he will be gaming at 1680x1050 so will the 4870x2 be an overkill? he will be playing most of the latest games, crysis, farcry,COH,grid, etc. so can the experts choose between the 3
1.hd4870
2.hd4870x2
3.gtx280

which card can he benefit the most.

If his budget permits the 4870X2, then yeah sure. But if you really want the bare minimum costs, then the 4870 will last him a while and should see him gaming very nicely at 1680x1050...

So yeah, the 4870.

There are very few occasions I would think SLi as a viable option, and this isn't one of those times.

What games do you know of that won't be able to play on 4870? None, so why would you want to buy two and crossfire them? If it were me I would buy one save up your money wait until you would actually need to get anything better and spend the rest 1-2 years from now.

I agree with him, go with the Radeon HD4870.

yeah his budget can fit in the hd4870x2, i just want to make sure if its worth it because likei said he will be only gaming at 1680x1050, i just want to know if he can benefit from hd4870x2, or will it jsut be a waste of money.

4870 would be the best option of those three for 1680x1050.

Get a 30inch monitor, then get the 4870x2...

Otherwise no.

yeah 4870 def. his one, or visiontek preferably. But if this guy is one of those guys who'd rather spend a lot more and just never upgrade until his comp is ancient, then a x2 might be the way to go. but no doubt a nvidia card will be out all too soon thatll beat it.

I'd have to say 4870 at 1680x1050 like the others. There shouldn't be any problems. Thing's don't get super demanding till 1920x1200, in which case i'd highly reccoment the 4870x2.

but if budget is not an issue i'd shoot for the x2. crysis is still a pain and noone knows how FC2 will perform.

1680 doesn't need a 4870X2, heck even a 4850 is enough, but out of those 3, 4870
