Default 4870 best card for the price?

My friend told me that this card is by far the best card for the price and that it will out perform a 260. Is this true? and if not what is the best card for around this price range.

Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H487F1GP Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Firstly we have a list of the cards ranked Graphics card Rankings

No this is faster for cheaper
Newegg.com - MSI N260GTX-T2D896-OCv2 GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Its a gtx260 core 216 and will beat the 4870 1gb in the majority of games although there a few exceptions ofcourse. Your friend didn't even pick out the best price/performance 4870 if you want to rub salt in his eyes;
Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H487FN1GP Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

The next card up is this
Newegg.com - ZOTAC ZT-X28E3LA-FSP GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

well according to you saltynay, that list says a 4870 is better then a gtx 260. Do you think you could update it to include the core 216, because he wouldn't have known.

There is a 512mb and a 1GB version. That list states that the 1gb version and the GTX260 core 216 are about equal, which they mostly are. The 260 core 216 pulls ahead in any game that is optimized more for Nvidia cards, though.

The 4870 512mb and 1GB are better than the old GTX 260, but not the GTX 260 core 216 revision. That clear it up for ya?

That is a 216 just because it doesn't say it big letters doesn't mean its not, go to the specs and look at stream processors
