sorry for being so specific. i want recording equipment in a small package.. but i also want a 7.1 surround (the 2.0 is for novelty i suppose.. and i dont like center speaker.. BUT i have a very high gain input to this peice of crap 5.1 "maddog" i have and i need something better

If you want a cheap recording solution, the M-Audio Audiophile 192 / 2496 is what you should be looking at.

However these do not have a front panel, no surround ect. But if you are looking into the BARE MINIMIUM PROFESSIONAL RECORDING CARD this is it. If your recording you shouldnt even look at the soundblaster line, as they are a consumer gaming card.
