Take a look at this thread: Gaming Computer, Need help with rig. $1000
I wouldn't invest on a 775 socket setup since the 775 socket is being discontinued.

do you also need an OS?

i agree, it wouldnt be smart to build a skt 775 build right now. you should be able to get an i5 build.

Same case and fans, as well as same PSU.

Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
$160 + shipping

Newegg.com - Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120 mm Core-Contact Freezer CPU Cooler W/TX-2 - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
$40 w/free shipping and $15 MIR

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards
$115 w/free shipping and $15 MIR card

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - Desktop Memory
$93 w/free shipping

Newegg.com - XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
$180 w/free shipping

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - Operating Systems
$195 w/free shipping

Total = $879 + shipping on CPU w/$30 MIRs

A single powerful GPU will stomp two weak GPUs in SLI/CrossFire.

You could also go with this CPU and save %61 and get free shipping. If you stayed with stock cooling you could drop the Core Contact, but I wouldn't.
Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

either go i7 920 if you can afford it (best, but most expensive)
or Phenom 2
or the i5 750

LGA 1366 6GB of RAM
AM3 4GB
LGA 1156 4 GB

I like HD 5770 simply because it supports DX11

not worth getting the i7 860
still LGA 1156 socket = no triple channel RAM
no performance gain in games compared to i5 750 (if same clocks)

grab a big bad cooler if you want to OC
