Hi guys, I've been trying to catch up with specs on the latest technology, and there's so much information to take in, I was hoping someone could just recommend a build for me. My employer has allotted me $1200 for a computer - So why not just build a sick gaming rig? I figure $50 on a mouse (logitech G5) and $50 or so for shipping, leaving me with $1100 max left to spend (can't go a dollar over the total). I have a decent monitor, but every other internal component has to be factored in to this price (thermal paste, what?).

Also, any mail-in rebate deals wont be able to play into the total price (I wouldn't see a cent of it anyways).

Thanks in advance! You guys sound like you really know your **** :)

It's true, this is the greatest thing ever =P Thanks a ton

One more thing - I'd really like this computer to be able to run Ubuntu when I'm not actually playing games. Compatibility here is a must, though I feel like I may be on my own on this one.

By the way, what resolution is your monitor?

EDIT: Stalin just posted almost the exact same parts as what I was picking out. Go with the parts suggested above, you'll be mighty happy with it. :)

trust me i know how u feel, i spent 300 on one of my gtx's and by the time i got it they dropped $100

hes not saying its crappy hes just saying that new tech is coming out so quick right now and everything is loosing value fast

yea we all got the ideal 1000-1200$ build down pretty good lol

Ah, wonderful guys. Much appreciated. Any word on whether this hardware is supported in Ubuntu?

Also, a side note - it just dawned on me that my monitor is a 17' LCD max res 1280 x 1024. It is crappy as all ****. Would it be worth sacrificing some of the other hardware to get a new monitor? How much worse would a $900 build be as compared to the quality I'll lose from the monitor?
