The 970 is a waste of money compared to the 1070 unless he can get it for less than 200 used. The prices won't really drop retail, they'll just get replaced by the 1000 series.

Yes, good point. I suppose they have a history of producing a budget version using the newer architecture which will likely perform just as well or better than the 970. Perhaps in a smaller form factor also. Before my 970 was GTX 260, which looks like the hulk compared to other cards these days half the width which out perform it.
